dry ice in a glass of orange squash
In July I pointed my camera at the sky during a thunderstorm, turned a glass of orange squash into a carbon dioxide fountain, and helped introduce a 13kg watermelon to a bill hook.

Lightning photography, dry ice, and a watermelon

Thunderstorms

We've had some outstanding electrical storms this summer, and one evening I decided to see if I could capture any lightning strikes on camera.

I pointed my camera towards the storm and set it up to take continuous two-second exposures while I held down the shutter button.

Naturally all the best lightning strikes happened when I happened to not be taking photos, but I got a couple of nice shots.

Dry ice

Having ordered some frozen fish online for my dad's birthday, I found myself in receipt of some dry ice that hadn't sublimed inside the polystyrene packaging by the time I had unpacked it.

Tim, who was around, having been helping fit the new kitchen, suggested we use some orange squash for a colour contrast. It worked rather well!

Watermelon & pizza party

For Tim's birthday we went to Emily's mum's place to have a pizza oven party. Tim also brought over a 13kg watermelon he'd bought in West Hampstead.

Emily's mum has an old bill hook. You can see where this is going. Action shot!

We all had a turn hacking a piece of watermelon off for ourselves. It was a particularly tasty one, too, which is just as well because it took the three of us several days to finish eating it.
