October was quite busy due to proto-house-hunting, where I visited Brighton one weekend and Nottingham another weekend to see what they were like. I also went to see the singer Nerina Pallot at the Exeter Phoenix, visited Greenway House (better known as Agatha Christie's house) with Ems and her mum, and made Hallowe'en-themed cakes for, well, Hallowe'en.

In September I attended PyCon UK for the third time. This time I submitted a talk, and it was accepted! So I did it, and it was scary, but went okay! Unlike last year I didn't take a break from work before PyCon, and it left me a little less able to cope with the crowds (or maybe just the stress of the talk), so I'll aim to add that back in before PyCon UK 2019. But I met up with lots of friends and had a good time anyway!

In August I attended Nine Worlds, a geek convention in London, for the second time. I've attended it once before and enjoyed it again this year. The highlights for me were attending an introductory swordfighting lesson which I got a lot out of; and seeing comedian Guy Kelly performing his act Letter of Last Resort. I also ticked off a personal achievement, and generally enjoyed myself.

In July I did two escape rooms: Mystery Room and Book of Secrets, both in London on separate occasions, and also visited the Astrophotographer of the Year exhibition at Greenwich observatory.

In June I attempted to visit the Maunsell Sea Forts in the Thames Estuary but unfortunately the boat broke down! I also went on a walk around Sourton Downs on Dartmoor and did a full moon hike with Ems where I got scared by a cow saying hello.

The main thing I did in May was visiting Vienna to attend PyDays Wien with [personal profile] katzenfabrik, and I finally got to meet up with my friend Gil after 12 years of knowing her online! After Vienna I took a short trip to Bratislava which was great. I also beat The Fourth Samurai escape room with my family in Bristol for my brother's birthday.

In April I started growing broad beans, made wild garlic and hazelnut pesto, and wrote four short stories. I also achieved a third of a century of existance.

As a child I used to read a lot, but during my twenties I had trouble finding books I liked and ended up falling out of the habit. Now I’m trying to get back into it.

It snowed across two weekends in March, so that's what this entry is about!

By pure chance we ended up in Tallinn for Estonia's 100th anniversary! Tallinn itself was very picturesque and we did a couple of tours to some very interesting and beautiful places too; I'd thoroughly recommend Estonia to anyone looking for a holiday destination.

I spent just two full days in Helsinki before catching a ferry to Tallinn for the last stop of my holiday; we visited Suomenlinna and Nuuksio National Park which was breathtakingly beautiful.

I visited four countries in February, three of them new! In Switzerland I met up with Sean, Samathy, Rae, and David, then I travelled in spirals through the scenic Alps by train to Milan with Sean.

The snowdrops were out in January, and our garden turned out to be full of them! I also visited The Little Fleece, a National Trust holiday cottage in Gloucestershire, for the yearly "Landmark Trust" weekend.

In December I did two escape rooms (plus one in a box), walked through Exeter's underground passages, stacked a lot of logs, and went swimming in the sea on Christmas Day.

I visited Ukraine for five days in December with Emily and Tim, with a two-day tour of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone booked in the middle. Here's what we got up to on the second day in the Zone!

In November, on top of walks on Dartmoor (pictured), I visited the JET fusion reactor tokamak, walked in Christmas Common, beat the Maioc Crisis escape room at Mission Escape Exeter, played board games in Exeter's board game cafe, and signalled Morse Code with a torch across more than a kilometre.

PyCon UK is an annual gathering of Python developers and enthusiasts which this year took place in Cardiff for the second time in a row. But that description makes it sound dull! PyCon has a fantastic atmosphere that I've not seen replicated at any other (admittedly few) tech conferences I've been to, and this time, my second, I took the full five-day experience.

October was busy! I went to Emily's Fish Party on the 30th anniversary of the Great Storm of 1987, made the most of my free time in Amsterdam on a work visit, submitted my novel for consideration for the first time to some agents, beat the Time Run escape room, rode on the Mail Rail, walked in the Brecon Beacons (just about) and, finally, had a fantastic time at PyCon UK 2017 (more on that next post).
