iguana: (winter hat)

Looking back at the first three months of 2023, it's quite apparent how burnt out I was getting at work, which culminated in me quitting my job at the end of March, despite having dropped to a 4-day week at the start of January. I did manage a few things though, most notably starting Roller Derby training, and working on STC: Reillustrated!

January 2023

Samathy persuaded me to try being a "Non-Skating Official" (NSO) at a roller derby scrim happening near me, so I turned up and helped with timing 30 second penalties in the penalty box. One of the teams playing, I think, was the Super Smash Brollers, who I joined on the strength of having met some of them, and finding out that they trained in the nearby sports hall a mere 15 minute walk from home.

I also met my Dutch friends, Alyssa and Bertram, who were visiting London, and I finished painting my room, a task which I'd been forced to do since the wallpaper that had come with the house unexpectedly and suddenly went mouldy. Eek! It's orange now, just like a bedroom should be!

February 2023

In February Angel and I started work on Sonic the Comic: Reillustrated issue 3, on a pretty tight schedule to make it the anniversary edition for Sonic the Comic, which started 30 years ago this year (and ended in 2001!). It was really good to have a fun project to focus on, and I was once again the project coordinator for that. (We'd finish it on time, and released in May!)

I had my first roller derby training session too, along with a new intake of rookies. A very different style of skating to the jam skating I'd been learning at the lessons run by the roller disco, but a lot of transferable skills.

I also made lemon marmalade, inspired by the podcast I listen to (Sonic the Comic the Podcast) as it discussed the marmalades in an old advert from 1997.

March 2023

I had a hotel in Matlock booked in March, moved due to a set of knock-on-effects from when I had covid, which forced me to take a weekend hiking in the area.

It was fortuitous timing as I think I desperately needed a break, and as it happened we had a good amount of snowfall which made the walk I made from Whatstandwell railway station to Matlock extremely pretty.

The next day, I hoped to ride the heritage railway line at Matlock, but it was cancelled due to the snow, so instead I hiked a circular route that took me partly along the railway line and then back to Matlock across country.

It was a relatively pretty walk, but the highlight was getting back to town and buying a set of framed dragon illustration A4 prints, which now live on the wall of my back room.
