For the first weekend in August, Emily and I went to Danebury Ring while staying at Emily's mum's place. Afterwards, we found a hammock in storage and set it up. Hammocks are very comfortable!

The next weekend we had an awesome day out. Everything just worked out perfectly.

We went to Kew Gardens in the morning, and took a picnic lunch with us to eat there. It was a gorgeous sunny day and we had a lovely time walking around the gardens. We saw peacocks and pagodas. We ate coconut ice cream and walked along a treetop walkway. There was also a David Nash artwork exhibition.

We got back into London in time for dinner, and went to Pho, a Vietnamese restaurant in Soho that we'd been to a few times, and often gets very busy. However, we got a great table in a corner and had a tasty meal as always.

We'd read that there was due to be a firework display near the Gallions Reach DLR station to celebrate the end of the Olympics later that evening, so after the meal we walked down to Embankment Pier where steel drums were playing nearby, and took the Thames Clipper ferry along the river in the dark, aiming to get to Woolwich where we'd be able to see them. We got splashed with nice cool water when the boat turned, and we passed under the green laser being shone down the Greenwich Meridian from the observatory in Greenwich Park. The views of Parliament, the London Eye, Tower Bridge, the Shard, the City and the O2 were amazing.

We realised once we got to the O2 port on the ferry that we were not going to make it to Woolwich in time to see the fireworks, so we got off the ferry and decided to ride the Emirates Air-Line (cable cars) instead. They would usually have closed by now but due to an Olympic event being held in the Millennium Dome were running until later in the evening, and because the Olympic event hadn't finished yet, it was so quiet that we got an entire pod to ourselves!

While we were on the cable car, we also saw the last of the fireworks going off in the distance, so we got to see the fireworks after all. In our own pod. After zooming down the Thames in a speedy ferry. Awesome!

We caught the DLR back to Woolwich Arsenal where, on the other side of the platform, a man dressed in a lot of red was playing a bongo. He wasn't hired by the station or anything, he just had a bongo and wanted to play it. Most people on the platform (including us) ended up clapping or dancing along. London can be really awesome when it wants to be. We got the fast train back to Dartford and were soon curled up cozy in bed.

At the end of the month we took a holiday in Berlin, Vienna, and then came back to the UK to attend EMF, a geek camp in Milton Keynes. More on those in the next post(s)!
