Nominations are closed! I will be working through the remaining nominations that have yet to be reviewed. I do not have any plans on posting another query post, although I will if I have any questions.

A huge thank you to the tagmods for helping me tackle our massive nominations dashboard! We have over 3,000 nominations and I would not have been able to climb that mountain as quickly as I did without you. You have been a tremendous help. ♥

*

In the meantime, please have a look at the tagset, specifically what you're interested in requesting and offering, and let me know if you see any errors such as duplicates or strange typos by Tuesday 12 August at 11:59pm EDT. [ In your timezone. ] The tagset will be finalised by this time and will not be changing for any edit requests.

When flagging errors, please provide the fandom and the nomination as it sits in the tagset so I can easily find them! Thank you to everyone who has already flagged duplicates and errors!

Sign-ups will open on Wednesday 13 August, time unspecified. Please be aware that Tuesday 12 August at 11:59pm EDT. [ In your timezone. ] is the deadline for 2024's participants to have commented on their gifts from that round. Here is a handy link for the 2024 collection. (If your nominations are fine, perhaps have a look around at our previous collections and comment on some of the gifts! We have fantastic works in our collections!)

Thoughts on fandom
Fantastic Four (2025) vs Marvel Cinematic Universe
I have several nominations for Fantastic Four: First Steps characters, but we have them split across MCU and FF:FS in the nominations dashboard. Did the nominators—or those who are interested in requesting/offering—oppose me placing them under "Fantastic Four (2025)"? I know that this movie is technically in the MCU, but as it takes place on another Earth, I'm considering accepting it as a different "continuity" to the other MCU relationships.

All the nominations that have been submitted for this sub-fandom are approved, even though, at the publishing of this post, I have not officially approved them yet. I just need to know where to put them.

*

Rejected nominations
If you oppose a rejection because it's eligible or I've made a mistake (it happens—I have been hit with AO3's "Retry Later" and "You're clicking too quickly" messages repeatedly over the last 48 hours that has reset my progress when approving nominations 😫), please let me know before 11:59pm on Tuesday 12 August so these nominations can be reinstated into the tagset.

These nominations were rejected during the last round of nomination review:

Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Neville Longbottom/Luna Lovegood (HP) - Over 250 works.

due South
Benton Fraser/Margaret Thatcher - Over 250 works.

Stranger Things (TV 2016)
Eleven | Jane Hopper/Maxine "Max" Mayfield (Stranger Things) - Over 250 works.
Maxine "Max" Mayfield/Lucas Sinclair (Strainger Things) - Over 250 works.

Quantum Leap (TV 1989)
Sam Beckett/Al Calavicci - Over 250 works.

Thank you!

Reading. Allie Brosh, Jeannie Di Bon, Helena Attlee, Louis MacNeice, friends misc. )

... and several of the magazines that have been sat around causing Guilt and a sense of Obligation, subsequent to which I have happily recycled them. Favourite fact from the three so far: Garden Organic/the Heritage Seed Library are trialling using tuning forks to pollinate their tomato crops! ( Facebook | Instagram )

Bonus: sifting through a pile of notebooks etc to try to work out who the hell they belong to, mostly salvaged from the pile that was due to go out to event-freecycle on the basis that SURELY I could do something useful with them if, you know, I sat down with them at a time that wasn't in a field under Significant time pressure while Very tired. And I could! One and a half remain unidentified (I say "half" because We're Working On It).

Writing. A lot of lost property e-mails.

Cooking. One new recipe from East: paneer, spinach and tomato salad, accompanied by the herbed naan from the Leiths How to Cook Bread book (this is probably on my To Cook Through list). I was into this!

Also vaghareli makai ("spiced Indian corn") by way of David Lebovitz, and a slightly underwhelming lemony fennel and broccoli pasta (significantly improved by the addition of pine nuts).

Eating. STRAWBERRIES. Blackberries. Local plums are starting to be ripe!

Exploring. Poked around the green belt a bit to see how the plums were doing! And I think that's most of it?

A very brief poke around the entrance to the Pimp Hall Nature Reserve following a successful drop-off of Objects to the adjacent Household Waste Recycling Centre; tragically the signs on the gates claimed that they'd be locked at 4 p.m., which we had not quite anticipated, and we only reached them at 3.58. Next time, perhaps!

Creating. Hmm. Does sitting around knolling for the purposes of the big lost property post count? I think it probably does; certainly while the photos still aren't good (am I contemplating a lightbox and a tripod of some kind of this specific terrible hobby? to my slight horror, I kind of am...) the arrangements are getting much easier to parse visually, I discovered upon going back through a bunch of them, which I am pleased about.

Growing. Found a surprise pocketful of dried Sugar Magnolia pods, so I am definitely in the black when it comes to number of seeds for next year, which is a pleasant surprise!

the whole MCU under the cut )

In looking at this list, lmfao you can see precisely what year I quit the MCU. I have seen none of Phase 5 and don't really have any desire to seek any of it out. I honestly had not realized that there was a four-year gap between the last Marvel movie I'd seen in theaters and Fantastic Four! That is almost as long as I was actively in MCU fandom!!

Doing this meme also made me realize how few of these movies I have rewatched. Almost all of them were one viewing in the theater and then never again. Winter Soldier is definitely my most rewatched - I saw it four times in theater and have rewatched it more than once on DVD since then.

FWIW, I really liked Fantastic Four, and I have been thinking about going to see it again before it disappears from theaters. I liked that it was self-contained and that it felt very old-school both aesthetically and in its plotting. (It's tightly written, especially for a superhero movie. There are no scenes I'd cut, and that includes the big fight scenes/set pieces.)

I have negative interest in the Phase 6 movies that are to follow it, though. I don't know who the Avengers even are anymore, and I don't really care.

The weekly chat posts are intended for just that, chatting among each other. What are you currently watching? Reading? What actor/idol are you currently following? What are you looking forward to? Are you busy writing, creating art? Or did you have no time at all for anything, and are bemoaning that fact?

Whatever it is, talk to us about it here. Tell us what you liked or didn't like, and if you want to talk about spoilery things, please hide them under either of these codes:

Today I have got Somewhat Caught Up on last event's lost property Situation. My GREAT TRIUMPH was, partway through the paperwork, going "... I'm sure that brooch in particular is... Oddly... Familiar..."

-- and indeed upon going back through my records it transpires that I HAD RETURNED IT TO ITS PERSON AT THE FIRST EVENT THIS YEAR.

So my spreadsheet is duly updated and they can have it back again at the last event of the year :)

(Some other victories: cut-price overripe strawberries. More of my mother's birthday cake. Rye and caraway and poppyseed bread. the elderly niter kibbeh in the fridge still being Definitely Food and substantially enlivening dinner. Shitposting in the PD crew Discord. Starting Solutions and Other Problems with A, and the cake, and the strawberries.)

Reminders:

  • We do not accept Canon Character/Reader nominations. These will be rejected without query.

  • Please disambiguate your nominations or risk these being rejected.

  • Please refer to the nominations guidelines before nominating.

We have a few queries. If I do not hear back from the nominators 24 hours after the publishing of this post, I will be rejecting the applicable nominations.

Appaloosa - All Media Types
Virgil Cole/Everett Hitch (Appaloosa)

We do not accept "All Media Types" nominations. We're happy to hear cases about why this should remain under the AMT umbrella from the nominator. If we don't hear back, or if this is not amended per our guidelines, this nomination will be rejected.
Accepted as is.

Fire Emblem Series
Edelgard von Hresvelg (FE3H)/Karin (FE5)

This is nominated under an RPF tag, but it looks like all the relationships are fictional characters. Can the nominator please correct the fandom for this nomination, or explain why this should be accepted as is. This nomination set will be rejected if not amended/if case is not made.
Accepted.

Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth (Video Games 2020-2024)
Cloud Strife/Wedge

Should this be under "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII" as a fandom? Please amend the fandom or this nomination will be rejected.
Accepted.

Queries
Multi-Fandom
Roberta (L'ultimo Terrestre)/Majid Zamari

This looks like it is fandoms thrown together under one umbrella. Is this a canon? (Google says it is fan-created content.) Or is this an AO3 canon? We will not accept this if this is an AO3 canon as it looks like recursive work. Please amend to Crossover Fandom and correctly disambiguate.

Severance (TV)
Irving B./Burt G.
Irving Bailiff/Burt Goodman

I am assuming this are the same characters nominated under different formats. Can someone canon familiar please confirm?
Both tags accepted, assuming it's clear that they are asking for two different versions of the pairing.

(Some cheerful things, in brief: turns out shimmer inks really do work better when you thoroughly scrub the feed of your fountain pen clean at least occasionally; I am excited about tomorrow's bread; I was Greatly Honoured by the Toddler in a truly toddleresque fashion the details of which I shall not go into; I have finally got my act together to order a copy of the Roti King cookbook; glorious comfort reread of a thing I'd totally forgotten was even available for comfort reread, and for bonus points there are new bits!!!)

Judge My Upcoming Baihe TBR!

Once again, time for my reading choices to be judged. The candidates this time are:

  • The Rose in the Abyss (深渊的玫瑰, pinyin: shenyuan de meigui) by Wu Liao Dao Di (无聊到底). By the same author as the alpaca baihe, this is set in a post-apocalyptic world. According to the JJWXC synopsis (which often can't be 100% trusted), the protagonist rescues a silent, feral girl whom she eventually discovers may not be entirely human.
  • The Pumpkin Coach and Cinderella (南瓜马车灰姑娘, pinyin: nangua mache huiguniang) by Mo Bao Fei Bao (墨宝非宝). A contemporary romance of some sort, by an author who mostly writes yanqing (and has had some of her stuff adapted as live action dramas). I'm reading this mainly because my pack rat tendencies mean I have it as an uncensored print edition — it's the first baihe to be licensed by morefate. Other than that, I know absolutely nothing about it.
  • Home for the Funeral (奔丧, pinyin: bensang) by Nan Hu Tang (南胡唐). Advertised as folk horror. The protagonist returns to her home village to host a funeral, and eerie things start to happen. I'm not particularly superstitious, but I will take extra care to make sure I'm not reading this during Ghost Month.
  • Memories of a Shanghai Summer (沪夏往事, pinyin: hu xia wangshi) by Shi Ci (是辞), a Republican Era tragedy (as 90% of them are).
  • 365 Ways of Surviving at a High Difficulty Level (三百六十五种高难度活法, pinyin: sanbai liushiwu zhong gao nandu huo fa) by Mo Ran Piao (莫然漂). Thriller that seemingly begins with one of the leads in a psychiatric institution. Here's hoping the author is at least vaguely normal about mental illness.
  • Salieri and Mozart (萨列里与莫扎特) by Z Lu (Z鹿), showbiz baihe with a romance between a pop idol type and a classically-trained opera singer.

I wanted to throw in at least one historical but the ones I looked at were just. Too long.
forestofglory: Cup of tea on a pile of books (books)
[personal profile] forestofglory
As the title says I've actually read some of the pile of graphic novels that I got from the library! Things have been busy and I've been sick so progress has still been slow.

The Worst Ronin by Maggie Tokuda-Hall, Faith Schaffer — A graphic novel about a teen girl who wants to be a samurai and an older jaded ronin. The tech level is handwavy feudal Japan but with cell phones, which I found distracting. I didn’t think the cell phones added enough to the book to be worth it. Content note: gore, grief and dying

Anzu and the Realm of Darkness by Mai K. Nguyen and Diana Tsai Santos— Graphic novel about a Japanese American girl named Anzu who has just moved to a new town and get accidentally swept into the underworld. I thought it was pushing a little hard on we can solve systematic problems like bullying with individual choices but it was mostly sweet. I liked the kind of cartoony art style and all the different mystical critters.

Dragon of the Lost Sea by Laurence Yep —I read this Chinese mythology inspired MG fantasy novel to the kid at bed time. I had read these books myself as a kid and I was a little worried that they wouldn’t hold up, but the suck fairy has not gotten them! It’s maybe a little weird that the dragons all have wings. Chinese inspired stuff written in English these days tends to be very strict about not mixing in more western elements like that but actually the mixing is fun. Anyways this is a fun adventure story with lots of characters with big personalities.

Navigating With You by Jeremy Whitley,Casio Ribeiro, and Nikki Fox —A graphic novel about two girls who are both new at their high school. They decide to go on a quest to find all 7 volumes of an out of print manga they both never finished reading. I loved this! Both girls are charming and quirky in a geeky way, the manga story within the story was lovely. One of them does have a dead mom, something I generally avoid but by the time that was revealed I was hooked. It was super fun and charming!

Himawari House by Harmony Becker —A graphic novel about three young women from different places who move to Japan and end up living in the same house. It's a very slice of life with lots of food and friendship but also some sad moments. The author has a heartfelt note at the end explaining that she wrote on the accents because she wants to destigmatise having an accent. I have mixed feelings about it though because I find written accents way harder to parse than spoken accents.

Am currently watching this random k-drama, mainly because I saw some homophobes getting mad about it. But also its studious avoidance of anything actually queer is colliding in weird and occasionally wonderful ways with, well, the central premise, which has female lead Kim Ji-eun waking up one morning and finding out that she now looks like a strange and objectively very attractive guy (this, so far, has been attributed to very handwavey genetic reasons).

Anyway, in the last episode I watched, Ji-eun's best friend, a webnovelist called Yu-ri (who we're supposed to believe is unattractive, presumably because she wears cute round glasses), has been invited to a Mean Girl frenemy's birthday party, where she gloomily anticipates being the target of pointed remarks about her eternal singleness. Ji-eun (still in attractive guy form) decides to turn up, pretend to be Yu-ri's boyfriend, and help Yu-ri get her ultimate revenge of the Mean Girl frenemy. The writer truly missed a trick by not having Ji-eun snatch a glass of something cold out of Yu-ri's hand and declaring, 'She shouldn't be drinking anything cold this time of the month, do you have any ginger tea with brown sugar?'*

The writer missed an even bigger trick by not making this a (stealth) GL, because Ji-eun's relationship with Yu-ri is currently about ten times more compelling than her relationship with her increasingly tiresome boyfriend.

*The ideal beverage to drink when one is on one's period, according to a whole shedload of c-media.
