I'm doing a Deathly Hallows and splitting my journal into two parts for this month, because quite a lot has happened so far, and I have some spare time to write it this weekend. Hopefully this won't backfire for Part 2!

Still no camera, I'm looking for suggestions for a new decent-lensed model. Do people tend to buy second-hand cameras from eBay, or is it better to just buy new?

On the first of July, on the recommendation of Emily's friend Matt, we went to see The Beta Males, a comedy troupe, at the Leicester Square Theatre. Their show was called Superopolis, a series of sketches set in a town where everyone has superpowers. The act was still being refined for their main performance(s) at Edinburgh but even so was well worth seeing, with a lot of funny sketches.

They were followed by Joseph Morpurgo, who did a kind of semi-improv based on assuming the identity of a photo in a slideshow. I found him particularly funny, perhaps partly because I was called up for audience participation at one point!

The next evening, we used the lecture theatre at Emily's workplace to have a private screening of Serenity. The space battles looked amazing and of course River Tam's sequence too.

I spend both days of last weekend on Hampstead Heath, the first for shortish walk from Hampstead Station to Hampstead Heath Station before catching the train back to West Hampstead and going to Homebase for more supplies.

On Sunday, I had a swim in Hampstead Ponds! The water was 21C at 08:30 and it was all very pleasant. I did three laps of the mixed pond, then got out and dried off while Emily did another two. Apparently I was lucky in that the temperature was a fair bit higher than it usually is, but I might try going again soon anyway!

Emily had organised a paper plane making competition for Tuesday -- we had to design one paper aeroplane ourselves, and then go on the Internet to find a professional design. I spent some spare time at the weekend trying out a few modifications to the standard dart aeroplane, and settled on the one that performed best, essentially a dart but with some upturned fins at the edges of the wings. For my Internet design, I chose The Lion

On Tuesday itself, Emily, Tim, Matt and I met up in the pergola at Hampstead Heath for a really nice picnic under the beach trees, then found some open space to have the competition. Three simultaneous throws of each plane, points allocated 5-3-2-1 each round. I took an early lead with my homemade plane, but The Lion let me down so Matt overtook me during the Internet plane throws. Tim got his plane stuck in a tree. It was all good fun!

This month I've also signed up to an online Science of Gastronomy course, which was free and I figured could be interesting. Right now I am eating pieces of crackers at three minute intervals for a homework assignment. Nom!
