August 2017

In August I visited Finch Foundry, "the last working water-powered forge in England", which was neat, and also attended Nine Worlds in London.
Nine Worlds
This was my first time at Nine Worlds, and I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. As it turned out, it was fantastic; all the bits I loved about the MCM Expo and Ayacon (2011? Has it been that long?) without the bits I didn't (the crowds and, somewhat guiltily, the Japanese/anime stuff). Essentially, it's a conference where a decent proportion of people are in cosplay, there are talks on just about any geeky subject you can name, and everyone there is exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and inclusive.
I failed somewhat at being sociable that weekend, but enjoyed the talks nonetheless. Here's a few of my favourites.
* Nine Worlds No-Stars script reading; if you'd ever wondered what Davros would be like if Lord Flashheart had been cast in the role, then this is the panel for you.
* The midnight movie, an old grindhouse movie called The War of the Stars, starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, et al. You should watch it! The organiser half-promised the grindhouse edit of Empire Srikes Back next year.
* Time Travel and Film, a talk about the different models of time travel deployed in film.
* Fantasy Hair Braiding Workshop; I went along as a guinea pig (I've never learned how to braid; I should) and came out with an awesome intricate set of braids. Thank you to the lovely lady who did it.

* How Do You Design An Escape Room, a talk by
mink_ette who created the brilliant Enter The Oubliette (Escape from New Pelagia) escape room I did a while back. She talked about creating mood, encouraging team bonding, and then brainstormed some ideas with the audience. I spoke to her quickly afterwards to see if she was working on another escape room, and she recommended me Time Run, which closes soon. (See an upcoming October 2017 post.)
* The effects of different POV on the reader -- it's like I'm writing a book and was after tips, or something. The speaker here, AC Macklin, made me wish I'd done a creative writing course in the past. It was really good.
My favourite cosplay I saw was a Princess Merida (from Pixar's Brave) and I also popped out one evening to watch Valerian at the cinema, which was extremely disappointing for a Luc Besson film (though maybe after Lucy I should have been less surprised about this).
I already have my ticket for next year booked!
